Mill Pond Restoration Project – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why is the restoration of the Mill Pond important?
Restoring the Mill Pond will bring back its natural beauty, improve water quality, and make it more navigable for recreation. A clean and accessible pond will also support local wildlife, enhance tourism, and create economic opportunities for downtown Green Lake.

2. What specific improvements are planned for the Mill Pond?
The project aims to improve water quality, remove excess sediment, restore natural habitats, and enhance public access for recreation such as kayaking, fishing, and walking trails. A detailed plan will be developed with input from our committee and the community.

3. How will the restoration benefit the local economy?
A revitalized Mill Pond will attract more visitors and outdoor enthusiasts to the area, increasing foot and boat traffic for local businesses and creating new opportunities for recreation-based commerce.

4. Who is leading the restoration efforts?
The project is a collaborative effort involving local government, environmental experts, community organizations, and residents who share a vision for a cleaner, more vibrant Mill Pond.

5. How will the project be funded?
Funding may come from a combination of grants, public funding, and private donations. Community support will be crucial in securing the necessary resources to complete the restoration.

6. Will residents have a say in the restoration plans?
Yes! Community input is essential. There will be public meetings, surveys, and other opportunities for residents to share their thoughts and priorities for the project.

7. How long will the restoration take?
The timeline depends on the scope of the project, funding availability, and environmental regulations. Initial planning and assessment may take a year or more, with phased restoration efforts following.

8. How will the restoration affect wildlife and the environment?
The project will focus on ecological restoration, improving habitats for fish, birds, and other wildlife. Efforts will be made to minimize disruption and ensure long-term environmental benefits.

9. Will recreational activities be restricted during the restoration?
Some areas may have temporary restrictions during restoration efforts, but the goal is to enhance recreational opportunities in the long run. Updates will be provided to keep the community informed.

10. How can I get involved or support the project?
Community members can participate by attending meetings, volunteering, spreading awareness, or contributing to fundraising efforts. Stay connected through local updates and social media for ways to get involved!

11. What has caused these issues in Mill Pond?

Mill Pond is facing issues that most ponds created as part of milling operations face.  Over time silt is deposited from the lake as it comes into the pond, and the growth of Algae has intensified this process.  Similar to the lake, run-off into the pond also creates changes that are harmful to the pond’s eco-system.

 12. Is this a private group doing this or are more organizations involved?

Friends of the Mill Pond is a Public/Private Committee formed at the suggestion of the city of Green Lake.  We are working closely with the Green Lake City, Green Lake Sanitary District, GLA, Wisconsin DNR, as well as local business owners and other community organizations.
